The power of feedback

With Term 2 well underway, students from Years 7 to 12 are actively engaged in their learning programs. For our Year 10 and 11 students, attention is now turning toward the upcoming exams. By this stage, students should be well into their study routines and viewing the exams as an opportunity to showcase the great work they’ve achieved so far.

For those who may not have started preparing, it’s not too late. Beginning now can still make a significant impact. We encourage students to adopt a consistent and manageable study schedule—short, frequent sessions are much more effective than last-minute cramming and allow for a more structured and less stressful approach.

At the end of last term, many of our junior students completed a number of assessment tasks. With results and feedback now available, either late last term or early this term, we encourage families to take time to discuss the feedback with their child.

At OLSH, we place a high value on feedback. While final results are important, we believe feedback offers the most powerful opportunity for learning and growth. Rather than viewing assessments as an endpoint, we encourage students to use them as a springboard for improving their skills and understanding. The skills demonstrated in one assessment are often transferable across subjects and tasks, supporting a broader development of learning capabilities.

Let’s continue to work together to support our students as they strive for excellence and growth this term.

Improving strength, fitness and confidence

Year 10 students recently participated in a series of four self defence lessons during their HPE class time, delivered by qualified instructors from the Women’s Self Defence Network. Throughout the program, students learned and practiced a range of self defence techniques and strategies designed to build confidence, awareness, and personal safety.

The sessions provided students with valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom. They gained practical knowledge on how to identify and apply different self defence techniques to safeguard themselves from harm, while also understanding how these skills can be used effectively in real-life situations. By actively engaging in the physical and mental components of the program, students improved their strength, fitness, and overall self-confidence.

A big thank you to Rachael, Tristan, and Tye, who delivered the sessions with energy and professionalism, ensuring that the content was up-to-date and engaging. Their expertise and enthusiasm made a lasting impact on our students. Well done to all involved!

Hands-on operations management

Our Year 12 Business Management students toured the Yakult factory as part of their unit of study on Operations Management. They viewed the production line and discussed processes with the staff. Here’s Ava’s reflection on the activity.

Our recent excursion to the Yakult factory in Dandenong was a great experience. During our tour of the factory, we explored the whole production process of Yakult, from the making of the bottles to the fermentation of the milk that makes the probiotic drink.

At the end of the tour, we had the chance to taste both Yakult and Yakult Lite, which was a refreshing end to the visit. This excursion was beneficial to us all as it showed us a real life example of our new unit in Business Management - operations management. Overall, this experience was both fun and educational, giving us insights into the many small but crucial details involved in Yakult’s smooth production operations, that we might not have otherwise thought about. - Ava
