Junior years

The transition to secondary school is an exciting and at times challenging one for students. As well as our Year 7 transition program, we have shaped our curriculum to provide our students with a foundation for their six years of secondary school education.
In their first two years of schooling at OLSH College, our students are offered a broad range of core and specialist subjects that are both exciting and challenging.

Year 7

Year 7 students are enrolled in six core subjects for the full year. The year level is arranged into core groups and the students stay together in these groups for the core subjects. This provides an opportunity to get to know other students and classroom spaces as they adjust to secondary school life.

The core subjects are:

  • Religious Education
  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Science
  • Humanities – including Geography, History and Civics and Citizenship
Seven specialist subjects complement the core curriculum, providing the students with an understanding of the content covered in these subjects which helps inform their future subject selection.

The specialist subjects are:

  • Art
  • Chinese and Italian (Language other than English)
  • Dance
  • Design and Technology
  • Drama
  • Food Studies
  • Music

Year 8

Our Year 8 students continue to study the six core subjects from Year 7 and their choice of Italian or Chinese, which becomes an additional core subject. These core subjects are studied for the full year.

The core subjects are:

  • Religious Education
  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Science
  • Humanities – including Geography, History and Economics and Business
  • Chinese or Italian
Six specialist subjects complement the core curriculum, and each of the specialist subjects are studied for one semester.

The six specialist subjects are:

  • Art
  • Dance
  • Design and Technology
  • Drama
  • Food Studies
  • Music

Literacy and numeracy support and extension is available for students. Literacy programs are offered to students needing support, in lieu of their Language other than English (LOTE) subject. Numeracy support is provided in the classroom from specialist teachers.
