Belonging to our shared spirit

Last week at the Swimming Carnival, we truly experienced a sense of OLSH Spirit—an opportunity for everyone to come together, enjoy each other's company, and support their House. While each participant competed for their House, the OLSH spirit remained the same- 4 Houses but 1 shared spirit. This shared sense of purpose and belonging was felt by all who took part in the day.

Belonging to a group that is like-minded with similar interests is highly beneficial to a young person’s wellbeing. It gives them a sense of security helping them feel valued which in turn builds their confidence.

Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop. For some these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people. For others, this can be much harder to navigate.

Positive friendships are an important part of the journey to adulthood. Parents can support their daughter by providing guidance in the many social and emotional skills required for a healthy relationship. This will help them to obtain, retain and maintain friendships.

Supporting your daughter in navigating friendships that bring out the best in her can be challenging. In the Friendship and Belonging edition of SchoolTV, parents can learn how to support their daughter’s friendships so that they experience a true sense of belonging. Watch it here

Inspiring leadership breakfast

Four of our Student Leaders attended the International Women's Day breakfast at Parliament House this week. Here are their reflections from this special event.

"The International Women’s Day breakfast at Parliament House was uplifting and gave me the opportunity to connect with other girls my age who want to make a difference in their leadership position. At my table we all talked about how to support women coming out of situations such as domestic violence through providing them with clothes, period products, and other items. The two speakers, Jess Wilson MP and Georgie Crozier MP, talked about how they were elected as well as challenges they faced when striving for change. I loved seeing how one of the speakers is a mother and she talked about how she's able to bring her baby into work and still make a difference in her job, which I found inspiring. This experience highlighted the importance of women in leadership and helped me to recognise the need for female voices in power, which I want to bring back to OLSH by helping build confidence in others and myself." - Taylor

"I was thrilled to participate in the International Women’s Day breakfast at Parliament House, in which four of us specialist captains were invited to attend to celebrate this special event. It was truly inspiring to hear from two incredible guest speakers from Parliament, who shared their personal journeys and the challenges they've overcome in their careers, such as one having become a mother and challenged with the balance of her personal life with her work but never gave up. Their speeches left a lasting impact on me. While they spoke, I was seated with other leaders from various schools, hearing about their initiatives and the positive changes they’re creating, which were equally motivating. We even participated in icebreakers to get to know one another, the other activity included listing crucial issues in our communities, and by working together, we created new ideas and initiatives to promote and aid these events. Overall, this experience was both empowering and enlightening, and I feel so fortunate to have been part of such a meaningful event." - Angelina
