Establishing good study routines for the year ahead

As we move into the middle of Term 1, our learning programs have quickly found their rhythm. Our Year 7s have settled in well and are now taking the next steps in their transition into the College by setting their goals and establishing effective learning processes.

This is an ideal time for all students, across all year levels, to form strong study habits and engage with their curriculum at a deeper level. By establishing good study routines early in the year, students can set themselves up for a more productive and rewarding learning experience.

Much like our Year 12s, who are already looking ahead to the end of the year, all students can benefit from the practice of backwards planning—setting long-term goals and mapping out the steps needed to achieve them.

With many students approaching their first assessments, this period provides an opportunity to receive valuable feedback that fosters academic growth. Regardless of the assessment outcomes, it is the feedback that drives improvement. We encourage students to embrace these challenges as positive learning experiences.

APEC Youth STEM Conference

Last year students applied to participate in the 2025 youth program, part of a Cross Mentoring Research program designed to make academic relationships between scientists and teen researchers from APEC economies. This year’s theme is STEM and Climate Resilience.

Three students were successful: Isabelle Atherton, Imogen Murphy and Samantha Milenkovski, all in Year 10. Considering Australia had been allocated a maximum of 20 students, the success of the three students should be celebrated!

The program began with online lectures in December. By the end of December, students had to submit their preferred research topic related to the program theme. Students were placed into teams and have been working on line with those teams. We wish them every success as they continue working in this intensive program. Here are their reflections so far.

“The APEC Youth STEM Conference has enabled me to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to tackle real world problems in our society. The program allows young aspiring scientists from all over the world to come together and share their passion in all things science!” - Samantha

“Being a part of the APEC Youth STEM Conference has helped me to collaborate with international students with a passion for STEM. I am so excited to see what this experience brings and how I can contribute to solving worldwide problems!” - Isabelle

"The APEC Youth STEM Conference is an exciting opportunity that is allowing us to connect with like-minded people internationally. I am looking forward to learning lots of new things while participating!" - Imogen
