As we welcomed back the College community for Term 4 we were set a goal at our welcome back assembly to be 'kind' to one another. In particular we were all reminded of the importance of building people up, instead of bringing them down, on social media. In his book The Anxious Generation author Jonathon Haidt explores what he describes as the rise of a phone-based childhood and a move away from play-based childhood. Our children are living more and more in the virtual world than at times in the real world. It is in this world that we know that people can be anything but kind. Ms O’Loughlin encouraged us to use social media for good, to build others up and not bring them down. If our world, our country, our school and our homes could be places of kindness, one could only imagine the world we would live in.
We celebrated the handover of leadership with our current Year 11s accepting the leadership of the College from our Year 12s. With the example of Jules Chevalier our student leaders and all members of the community were encouraged to follow in his footsteps in service to others. We were inspired to be on earth the heart of Christ.
Congratulations and thank you to all students who applied for a position of leadership. Each student demonstrated great courage, confidence, vision and love of OLSH. Taking on the challenge to run for a position of leadership whether elected or not demonstrated the quality of true leaders. Regardless of whether we hold a badge or not, it is about the values that we carry and the people we are towards all those of our community. The College is in good hands with passion and energy from the elected leaders and all members of the Class of 2025.
