Asking R U OK?

As people who Reverence Relationships this week we are inspired, reminded and empowered to connect in a meaningful way with those around us. We all know the feeling of others noticing when we may be struggling. R U OL day, September 14, reminds us that we don’t need to be a professional or an expert to reach out to others - we just need to be a good friend, a good parent, a good listener.

We all know that a conversation, or someone noticing, or someone reaching out can change a life? How can I let others in the world know that I am there for them?

Ask R U OK?
You don’t seem yourself lately? What’s going on?
Listen
I am hear to listen if you want to talk more? How do you feel about that?
Encourage Action
How can I help you? Have you talked to an adult? Let’s go and tell someone together.
Check In
Just wanted to check in and see how you are going? Did you talk to an adult about it? What did they say? Do you need more support?

As the quote states “Checking up on someone is like shining a light in the darkness. It can make all the difference”. In what way will I check in on others this week?

The OLSH R U OK? Challenge

  • Reach out to someone you haven’t spoken to in some time- text or call them.
  • Invite someone to join/sit with you at work, home or school.
  • Write a kind note or email to someone.
  • At home ask each person “What was the best thing that happened today?”

OLSH College Bentleigh

Sharing our OLSH Spirit

To forge greater links between the three OLSH schools in Australia, OLSH Bentleigh was invited to send four of our Year 10 students to OLSH Kensington in Sydney. The aim was to provide students and staff from the three OLSH schools opportunities to embrace and celebrate our shared spirit.

Students attended classes at OLSH Kensington, participated in the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be a part of another OLSH school. Thank you to Ms Sarah Logan and Dr Jia Zhou who accompanied our Year 10 students. Here are their reflections.

'Meeting the OLSH students from Sydney and Adelaide truly opened my eyes to seeing just how great our community is. It gave me the opportunity to find similarities and differences of the traditions at our respective schools, and also meet some amazing girls who I bonded with through our shared OLSH spirt. Meeting the Sisters who live in the convent was a great experience that I hope to have again. Through the tour of their beautiful chapel, I was able to see where they get their passion from. It is through serving others. I was told stories of theirs and other sisters’ efforts in missions, where they cared for those who were going through hardships. This opportunity has taught me so much and has been a great experience. I met many girls from Adelaide and Sydney who I hope to keep a strong friendships with.'-  Jess

'I was very grateful to have been chosen for this opportunity to represent the College along with three other students from Year 10. It was an incredible experience, and my favourite part of the trip was getting to experience their Feast Day. I found it very interesting to see the differences and similarities that we shared with their college. I really loved getting to know so many of the girls on a personal level during their classes as well as the other activities we were able to participate in, and I am very grateful that I was able to be a part of this experience. I have learned so much more about OLSH Kensington and their vast school history and have loved getting to know the wider OLSH community even better.' -  Ava

'It was an amazing opportunity, and quite fascinating to see how there is more than one OLSH in Australia, and that we were all OLSH girls, all a part of the same big family. My highlight from the trip was seeing how they celebrate their Feast day. OLSH Kensington celebrate their day with Mass in the morning, followed by a talent show. It was my highlight of the trip because it was such an amazing environment seeing everyone cheer each other on and the pride that they all shared in their school. Overall I am so grateful I got chosen for this OLSH Links trip, and absolutely loved the whole experience!' - Eve

'I am extremely grateful to have been a part of this wonderful experience! I met so many incredible OLSH girls and learnt so much about how the OLSH community has spread over Australia. Experiencing an OLSH Kensington Feast day was my highlight of the trip. They celebrate feast day with some trivia in homeroom, a whole school mass and a talent show including a year 12 act and a teacher’s act. Seeing the love and support from the whole school for each and every performer was truly inspiring, and I would love to see this kind of spirit grow even more at OLSH Bentleigh.' - Maddie

Safety of all at OLSH

OLSH recently had Council Traffic Safety Officers visit the college. Signage within school areas is designed with the safety of students and caregivers in mind. Due to the large number of road and pedestrian traffic at peak times (drop off/pick up), an understanding of traffic signage plays an important role in ensuring every student arrives and departs safely.

The Council routinely patrol school areas to ensure vehicles are compliant with the Road Rules for the safety of all road users. Infringements of up to $192 may be issued against offending vehicles.

We appreciate that parking around the school at peak times is limited and this may lead to congestion, however by better understanding the signed restrictions, drivers are able to drop off and collect students safely and legally. Thank you for your support of keeping the community safe.

No Parking
Within these areas, drivers are permitted to stop vehicles for up to two minutes if they are picking up or dropping off passengers and stay within three metres of the vehicle.

Kiss and Go

Kiss and Go signage does not hold legislative value, but rather exists to support and highlight No Parking areas.

No Stopping

Drivers are not permitted to stop within No Stopping areas for any period of time. This signage is installed to keep high risk areas such as intersections and congestion points clear of vehicles to minimise the risk of accidents and injury.

Disability Parking (Accessible Parking Bays)
Drivers not displaying a valid Accessible Parking permit are not permitted to stop within Accessible Parking Bays for any period of time. Accessible Parking bays provide essential safe stopping and parking areas for those with disabilities.

Double Parking (stopping a vehicle parallel to other parked vehicles within a roadway)

This includes waiting for a legal parking space to become available.
(While this Road Rule may not be supported by signage, it remains legally valid.)

Obstructing access to and from a footpath/driveway

Stopping a vehicle in a manner which obstructs vehicle or pedestrian traffic via footpaths or driveways.
(While this Road Rule may not be supported by signage, it remains legally valid.)
