Reflecting on cultural exploration
Our senior Italian Language students have explored some facinating topics this term, to immerse themselves in the culture of Italy and become conversant on current and cultural issues. It is a great way to study the language with real-world examples and contemporary issues. Here are some reflections from the students.
Year 10 - Virtual excursion to Rome: Exploring the shadows of Caravaggio
‘I really enjoyed out Art topic. We learnt so much about different art periods and styles as well as learning new grammar tenses which strengthened our writing skills. After learning all these things, we completed a writing task in the form of a journal entry which was on our imaginary trip to Rome!’ - Ava
‘Learning about the history of Italian art and architecture was really interesting and enjoyable. It provided us with insight into Italy’s past and gave us a real-world sense of what we were learning, allowing us to apply our knowledge when writing about a trip to Rome with our classmates.’ - Zara
Year 11 – Family relationship and per groups – Film Study
‘The film “Scialla” was interesting because it opened up our eyes to the many diverse communities that explore the ups and downs of family relationships and peer groups. The film expressed the joys and struggles of peer groups and family relationships, and gave us insight to be grateful for the people that surround us everyday, and the education we are so lucky to receive. The philosophy we took away was “Scialla” meaning "Take it easy".' - Eli, Emilia and Bella
Year 12 - Overtourism is killing Venice!
'In Italian, we studied the topic of over-tourism in Venice. I found this area of study interesting, as I previously did not know what Venice and Venetians were facing. We learnt about the different effects of over-tourism such as the degradation of the laguna due to the endless passing cruise ships, the high levels of air and noise pollution, the impact that the so called ‘eat and run’ tourists have on the economy the and how Air BnB is contributing to the housing crisis. Overtourism is threatening the historical, cultural and artistic heritage of this beautiful European city.' - Sienna
