Faith and Mission News
Article by Ms Megan Donohue
Deputy Principal Faith and Mission
In our Opening Mass, the College community welcomed all new students and staff to OLSH. Blessing the Year 7s, new students (Yrs 8-12) and new staff is always a highlight of this eucharistic celebration.
Our Year 7s were presented with their House badges and their Yr 12 big sisters prayed a special prayer for them to begin their journey at OLSH.
After communion, the 2023 Student Leaders were presented with their leadership badges and then commissioned for their year of service to the school community.
Thank you to the OLSH Sisters, Board members, parents and friends who joined us for this special mass. Thank you too to Fr. Martin Tanti who was our celebrant for the day.
Please join our students and staff for prayer at 8:25am on Wednesday mornings via our College Facebook page, live streamed from our Regnet Christus Chapel.
Each RE class takes a turn to prepare and lead prayer for our school community during the course of the year.
Thank you to Issoudun E who prepared and led a beautiful prayer for Ash Wednesday.
The theme for this year’s Project Compassion Lenten Appeal is For all future generations.
The OLSH College Lenten Appeal will run from Ash Wednesday until the end of Term 1. Each of the four Houses will take a turn planning and facilitating one fundraiser for the school community.
This year, all funds raised will be split between Caritas Australia and the work of the OLSH Sisters in overseas areas like Marianville in Papua New Guinea.
Caritas Australia is the international aid and development organization of the Catholic Church in Australia and provides education and healthcare in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, the Solomon Islands and India. Sr. Freda is an OLSH Sister working in a secondary girls’ school in PNG called Marianville, a school started by and still run by the OLSH Sisters. Sr. Freda is focused on providing the resources needed to educate almost 1,000 students at Marianville.

All monies raised in our Lenten Appeal will be most appreciated. Please donate generously to assist both the work of Caritas Australia and the OLSH Sisters.
Thank you to our student leaders who began our Lenten Appeal on Tuesday with a delicious Shrove Tuesday pancake breakfast.
Our Year 12s spent last week at Hartzer Park in Bowral NSW for their Retreat and Sydney for sight-seeing and they shared with us their experience of the week.
Retreat at Hartzer park gave us the time to connect deeply with our peers and friends, allowing us to see unexplored aspects of each other and our year level. Connecting with others we hadn't spoken to before provided a wonderful opportunity to deepen our understanding and world view. Reconnecting with nature on early morning runs through the gardens brought a much-needed sense of fulfilment to our souls. Coming back from retreat, we recognised the importance of taking deliberate time for ourselves to think deeply, to be present and also look forward to the future.
Two words to sum up our Hartzer and Sydney experience: Vibrant and Joyful - Amber and Jess
Retreat isn’t all about Jesus and God, it’s also about your inner self. Enjoy the fun times while they last. Putting your hand up and participating isn’t as scary as it seems.
Two words to sum up our Hartzer and Sydney experience: Action packed! - Varya
While retreat does have a strong focus on faith, it's also about bonding with everyone, interacting with people you thought you might not interact with; Learning about each other; bonding with yourself.
Two words to sum up our Hartzer and Sydney experience: Strong connections - Angelica
The highlights of our Retreat for me were visiting Hartzer for the first time, the movie night at Hartzer (watching Pitch Perfect 2 and singing and dancing with the cohort), and singing a verse at the mass in the choir.
Two words to sum up our Hartzer and Sydney experience: Splendid and Reflective - Chelsea
Retreat was a good time to get away from school and a time to create connections and bonds amongst the year level. It taught us to be grateful of what we do have, connect with our emotions and feelings, and learn to further understand our year level.
Two words to sum up our Hartzer and Sydney experience: Experience and Growth - Angeliki, Jasmine, Demiana
Our reflections on the Retreat were being grateful for the opportunities we get, taking time to reflect on yourself and spend time in nature, and always being kind to others, because you don't know what someone could be going through.
Two words to sum up our Hartzer and Sydney experience: Inspiring and dynamic - Natalie and Ruby
Our reflections on the Retreat were learning the saying “treat your neighbour how you want to be treated”, bonding with our year level and becoming more grateful for all that we have.
Two words to sum up our Hartzer and Sydney experience: Wholesome and Extravagant - Jasmyn & Lea
After spending time at the Retreat, we learned to connect more with friends' peers and to reflect and set goals for the year ahead, and we grew a closer relationship with God and our own spirituality.
Two words to sum up our Hartzer and Sydney experience: Fun and Adventurous - Liz and Mia
My reflections from my time at the Hartzer retreat include the importance of friendship, the importance of rest and relaxation and lastly the importance of honouring ourselves and our emotions.
