As we reflect on the term, we do so with gratitude and joy for all we have accomplished and experienced as a community. Research shows that when we focus on the aspects of life we are grateful for, it leads to positive emotions and improved well-being. Our Year 8 students had an unforgettable time on their camp at Mount Eliza, snorkeling in the bay, participating in leadership activities, and challenging themselves on the giant swing. They navigated the treetops at Camp Manyung and explored sustainability by creating their own pizzas with herbs from the gardens. It’s moments like these, during school events, that create lasting memories and foster positive emotions
"My highlight was the low ropes activity. I learnt how to communicate as a team." - Rachel
"My highlight was snorkelling but it was freeing. I learnt how to swim with flippers." -
"I really liked the crate climb. I learnt to cooperate with my group and I made new friends." - Zoe
“I learnt how to tie a knot with the raft building” - Mia
Let's take a few moments each day during the holidays to reflect on the things we're grateful for. There is so much in life that can bring us joy, if we're open to seeing it.
Happiness is a term that captures a huge variety of positive emotions such as humour, serenity, optimism, joy, pride, inspiration, love and hope. Happiness means different things, to different people and is essential to your understanding of emotional literacy. Throughout history, philosophers, religious writers and poets have pondered on the meaning of happiness and how it might be achieved. In the last few decades, scientists and psychologists have researched this further by studying a field of science called positive psychology.
The result of this research suggests there is a strong correlation between gratitude and greater happiness. Practising gratitude helps you shift your focus to positive memories or experiences, noticing the good in your life. Over time, this will re-wire your brain to create new neural pathways, increase your state of happiness and overall wellbeing.
In the edition Happiness and Gratitude of SchoolTV, parents and care-givers will learn how to achieve happiness and the benefits of practicing gratitude.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact me for further information or seek medical or professional help.

From Term 2, the College will transition to the parent portal as the method for recording all absences from school. You can access the parent portal via the app on your phone or via the OLSH College website.
Using the App - open the app and click on your daughter's name. Then click on the middle icon under your daughter's details (the icon is a clipboard with a tick on it). This opens the absence notification page, where you fill in the absence date, time, type and reason. Complete these details then submit the notification.
Website - go to olsh.vic.edu.au and scroll to the bottom of the website. Click on Ametur and you will be directed to the Parent Portal. Follow the same steps listed above, in Using the App.
Any requests for holidays during school time must be approved by the College Principal via an email to principal@olsh.vic.edu.au.
As the weather cools and we enter Term 2, all students are required to wear the full school winter uniform. A reminder that the blazer must be worn to and from school with the winter uniform. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any clarification.
