We marked the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday with a prayer service. Students and staff gathered in their four House groups and the Faith and Mission Captains and Year 12 leaders assisted to facilitate our prayer. Receiving ash on our foreheads, we were reminded to “Turn towards Jesus and be faithful to the Gospel.” We had time to reflect on the commitments we make in Lent to pray, to carry out works of love and to fast. Pope Francis shared some words to remind us of what we may fast from during Lent.
'Fast from hurting words and say kind words. Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude. Fast from anger and be filled with patience. Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope. Fast from worries and have trust in God.'
Shrove Tuesday marked the start of our official Lenten Appeal fundraising, commencing with a pancake stall. Our student leaders and staff made pancakes which were sold before school and at recess, raising funds for our two Lenten Appeal projects – Caritas’ Project Compassion and the OLSH Sisters’ clean water project in the Philippines. Prior to Shrove Tuesday, our student leaders also facilitated a cake stall on Valentines Day with all monies raised going to our Lenten Appeal.
As well as fundraising, we’re encouraging everyone to walk for 30 minutes a day which represents the average time spent walking to collect clean water by those we are fundraising for. We still have a number of fun House activities to come, so please continue to get behind our wonderful students as they work to make a difference in the lives of those most in need. So far, we have raised $1150.
