On Thursday September 12 in the midst of preparing for the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart we also recognized R U OK? day. A day dedicated each year to turn to each other to ask “R U OK?”.
Whilst we make a concerted effort with decorations around the school, signs on notice boards and on tv screens, and a cake stall with a touch of colour, this very simple question should not be limited to one day but encouraged every day. Having meaningful conversations with each other, building relationships and normalizing what is happening can change someone’s life.
We all go through ups and downs and times where we are struggling. It is not our responsibility to fix it but recognizing it and asking four simple questions can make a difference to someone and change a life. As our Year 12s begin practice exams and their final days at OLSH, as we begin the school holiday period which for some can be a long and lonely time, let us not forget to ask the simple question R U OK?
To forge links between the three OLSH schools in Australia, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Bentleigh warmly welcomed students and staff from OLSH Kensington, Sydney and OLSH Enfield, Adelaide.
The students were hosted by Year 10 students, Eva, Elly, Chloe, Annabel, Sarina, Holly, Matilda and Sidney, eight students who dedicated their time to make them feel welcomed and shared outstanding Bentleigh hospitality. Our guests shared classes together, were hosted by the OLSH Sisters for afternoon tea and participated in the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the 150th Celebrations and explored Marvelous Melbourne. Despite being in three different states, this opportunity enabled us to share our wonderful OLSH spirit that we have been blessed with.
