The past two months I have been sharing the beautiful surrounds of Hartzer Park with the Issoudun students. As a part of the program each girl has the opportunity to volunteer for Meals on Wheels with the staff from Mossvale. Each time we attend it reminds us of the great benefits of such experiences when we think about others before ourselves.
This is what we are called to be as Heart people. Who benefits more from such experiences? The benefits for the elderly that we served were immeasurable, their smiles and their sincere gratitude to see young people at their door were profound. Yet at the same time the girls received so much more. Each student was asked to describe their time in one word. Words such as “wholesome, grateful, touched, warmth, moved, unforgettable, kindness”, were some of the words used by the girls who had such a moving experience.
Volunteering has profound benefits. Research shows that it increases physical and mental health. When we care and show kindness to others, we feel good about ourselves, it fills us with a sense of positivity and it gives a sense of purpose. The girls have learnt valuable skills in social interaction, confidence in stretching themselves to meet and to interact with new people. They certainly have been student’s of Heart!!
Mia in Issoudun Hartzer Group 2 had this to write about her experience.
“This morning, we had the opportunity to help out with delivering Meals On Wheels. It was a very rewarding experience getting to greet different people with a smile, and to get to chat with them about little things which we you don't get to do often in our busy days. Whilst we were delivering we had the opportunity to sing Happy Birthday to a client Shelia, who turned 83 years old. Our presence well and truly put a smile on our faces and certainly brought her to tears! Thank you to Jock and Debbie and the team at Meals on Wheels for letting us join them on this morning’s deliveries!!”
