Our Student Leaders this term have challenged each one of us to “Dare to Care”, daring the College community to different tasks each week, such as talking to someone you don’t know in your Learning Mentor or high-fiving three different people in the school. Daring to Care is what we are called to be in this OLSH community as we reach out and Touch the Hearts of Others and our own.
As we carry this theme of Daring to Care in our pastoral care lessons, year levels will take part in sessions that touch on being Body Kind. To be Body Kind is an initiative by the Butterfly Foundation raising awareness and encouraging everyone in Australia to be kind to their own body and to others. To be Body Kind is how we nourish and nurture our bodies. It’s about language that is used to ourselves and to others. More information can be found on the Butterfly Foundation website.
We also need to Dare to Care about our mind and our emotions and to support this, students will take part in sessions run by Toolbox Education. Students will be introduced to mental health tools and given a chance to apply them in their own lives. From emotional regulation and overcoming procrastination to thinking traps and mental movies, students will walk away with a toolbox of strategies to use in everyday life. Find out more about this program on the Toolbox Education website.
As we continue to move through Term 3, we are inspired by our student leaders to Dare to Care. When we start with ourselves, we know that we will be in a better place to care for others.
“One must learn to care for oneself first, so that one can then dare to care for someone else.” - Maya Angelou

One classroom was abuzz last week when the Environment Club ran a lunchwrap making session, using recycled cloth and beeswax. The wraps can be used and reused in place of plastic wrap and therefore reduce our impact on the environment. Environment leaders Olivia, Adi, Ivory, Amber and Summer were thrilled with the number of students who participated.
“We want to make a difference in the lives of the students and their families and also in the wider community. Our goal is to make the OLSH community a sustainable living community. When we do this, we touch the hearts of others.” - Environment Leaders
