Congratulations to our Year 10s and 11s who have completed their end-of-year exams. We have seen a consistent approach to study, which has supported the learning growth of our senior students. We have also witnessed our Year 12 students power through many of their Unit 4 exams.

Our 2023 Kickstart timetable has begun and we have started the journey towards 2023. As communicated to parents, you do not need to have the books ready for Kickstart as our teachers will have the resources prepared for the classes. As we continue to build a strong learning culture, some of the fabulous achievements of our students are outlined below. Well done to all students involved in the various co-curricular pursuits.

Tournament of Minds participants recognised

The Tournament of Minds competition encourages students to use creative problem-solving skills to come up with a dramatic representation of the topic. This year three teams competed in the language literature category, exploring the idea of whether villains are really evil or if they are truly a product of the situation they find themselves in. Team 1 were awarded honours and Team 3 won the regional competition and were invited to compete at the state finals, which saw them work for three months to prepare.

We congratulate the following participants.

Senior Ethics Olympiad

The Ethics Olympiad provides an opportunity for students to develop important skills in communication, collaboration and critical thinking. Unlike a debate, students are not assigned a position. Rather they take their own considered position in relation to an ethical question.

Our Senior Ethics Olympiad students were runners up in the regional competition and were invited to compete in the international final against schools from Australia, New Zealand, India, Canada and the UK. They were awarded Honours for their strong competition in this event. Congratulations to Ruby Davidson, Elly Fredrickson Gresle, Terri Wong, Emily Travers and Halle Schroor.

Recipe for success

The pressure of a busy kitchen and preparing a two-course meal in ninety minutes didn’t faze our OLSH College Teen Chef competitors when they participated in the SEGAP Teen Chef competition.

The team made Miso chicken with spaghetti and Dutch carrots, followed by Berry Dacquoise and were awarded the silver medal for their restaurant-quality meal. Well done Chefs!

Great debate experience for our teams

The Inaugural Catholic Girls Schools Debating Competition was held at Avila College late last month. Three teams represented OLSH College, made up of Year 8 and Issoudun students, who spent many lunchtimes and time at home preparing for the competition.

There were three topics debated during the day:

  • A prepared topic: That Public Transport should be free
  • An advised topic: That we should ban internet gambling on sport
  • A secret topic: That employers should adopt a four day working week.

The debates were adjudicated by Year 11 students from both Avila and OLSH College.

The day provided challenges and opportunities for the students to further develop their debating skills, and they rose to the occasion, performing very well in all areas - two of which are usually reserved for more senior debaters: the advised topic and the secret topic.

Well done to both teams.
