Being a member of OLSH College’s Debating Team help the students to learn an important life skill and they have the opportunity to disagree and dispute in a formal setting.

Debating 1

Debating and public speaking provide students with excellent opportunities to increase their general knowledge, create irrefutable arguments, improve their research skills and improve their ability to write essays. All of these are necessary skills for success in their school years and beyond.

The College participates in an inter-school debating competition and junior school public speaking competition, both run by the Debaters’ Association of Victoria. In recent years we have also participated in the Barry Jones Cup; a debating competition between local schools and facilitated by our local member of state parliament. Another exciting competition we enter is the Thant Trophy for the United Nations Youth Association, which provides an opportunity for our students to represent an allocated country in a mock UN Security Council setting. Debating is fun and extremely rewarding, making it a great co-curricular option for many students.
